The Teenagers RYA Competent Crew Course provides young people aged 14–17 with an exciting introduction to sailing, seamanship and life aboard a cruising yacht while also meeting the requirements for the residential section of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Delivered as a five day liveaboard sailing experience, the course is designed to encourage teamwork, independence, confidence and personal development through shared living and practical sailing challenges. Students become part of the yacht crew, learning how to steer, handle sails, keep watch, navigate and operate safely aboard while sailing on the Solent and surrounding waters.
The residential nature of the course reflects the ethos of the Gold DofE Residential section by bringing together young people who may not previously know one another and immersing them in a new environment away from home. Living and working together aboard the yacht helps students develop communication, cooperation and responsibility in a unique and highly rewarding setting.
Successful students receive the RYA Competent Crew certificate together with an unforgettable residential sailing experience.
