DofE Residential – RYA Day Skipper Course
The Teenagers RYA Day Skipper Practical Course with the British Offshore Sailing School is an exciting liveaboard sailing course designed for young sailors aged 16–17 who want to build confidence, develop practical skippering skills and experience life aboard a cruising yacht. The course is also suitable for completing the residential section of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Delivered over five days on the Solent and surrounding waters, the course introduces teenagers to the practical responsibilities of skippering a yacht including pilotage, passage planning, yacht handling, navigation and crew management. Students become active members of the crew while sailing between ports, standing watches and participating fully in day-to-day yacht operations.
The liveaboard nature of the course strongly reflects the ethos of the Gold DofE Residential section by bringing together young people in a new environment where they learn to live and work together as part of a team. The experience encourages independence, communication, leadership and personal responsibility while building practical sailing knowledge and confidence afloat.
Delivered by BOSS Sailing, an established RYA Recognised Training Centre based at Hamble Point Marina, the course combines professional instruction, adventure and personal development within a safe and highly rewarding sailing environment.
Itinerary
The course is delivered over five days as a liveaboard sailing programme aboard cruising yachts operating from Hamble Point Marina and sailing throughout the Solent and surrounding waters.
Students live aboard the yacht throughout the course and participate fully in all aspects of daily yacht life including meal preparation, watchkeeping, passage planning and yacht operations.
Each day combines practical sailing instruction, pilotage exercises, marina manoeuvres and coastal passages designed to progressively build confidence and practical sailing ability.
The immersive liveaboard format creates a genuine residential experience while providing extensive time afloat in varied sailing conditions.

No previous sailing experience is needed. The RYA Competent Crew course is designed for complete beginners, and your instructor will guide you through everything step by step. By the end of the course, you should feel confident helping to sail the yacht, handling ropes, steering and taking part in everyday life on board.
