RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Preparation and Exam

The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Exam Preparation course is designed for experienced sailors preparing for the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence examination. The course provides intensive practical coaching and revision aimed at refining skippering, pilotage and passage making skills to the standard required for the exam. Conducted in the Solent and along the South Coast, the course offers demanding and realistic training in one of the UK’s busiest tidal cruising areas.

Under the guidance of experienced Yachtmaster instructors, candidates undertake a series of coastal passages by day and night, focusing on pilotage, navigation, yacht handling and command skills. The emphasis throughout is on practical decision making, skipper responsibility and the smooth management of yacht and crew in a variety of situations and conditions.

The preparation week also provides valuable revision of collision regulations, meteorology, passage planning and emergency procedures together with intensive boat handling under sail and power. Candidates are coached towards exam standard while gaining additional offshore and night sailing experience in real cruising conditions.

The Yachtmaster Coastal examination itself is conducted independently by an RYA examiner at the end of the preparation course. Successful candidates will be awarded the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence.
