RYA Training Course

Yachtmaster Offshore Exam Preparation Course and Exam

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Exam Preparation course is an intensive training and preparation programme for experienced sailors working towards the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence. Designed for candidates who already possess significant sea time and skippering experience, the course focuses on refining the practical skills, judgement and command ability required to pass the examination and operate safely offshore.

Training takes place in the Solent and along the South Coast under the guidance of highly experienced Yachtmaster instructors. Throughout the week, candidates undertake demanding passages by day and night while practising pilotage, navigation, passage planning, watch keeping and yacht handling under sail and power. Particular emphasis is placed on skipper responsibility, crew management and decision making under pressure.

Unlike a standard sailing course, the preparation programme is focused specifically on examination readiness. Candidates are coached intensively towards the standard expected by RYA examiners, with direct feedback and practical revision aimed at identifying and correcting weaknesses quickly. Boat handling, pilotage planning, emergency procedures and command routines are all practised repeatedly in realistic conditions.

The course concludes with the independent RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore examination onboard. Successful candidates will be awarded the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence.

Candidates should already possess extensive offshore sailing and skippering experience together with navigation knowledge to Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased standard.

Typical minimum pre-exam experience includes:

  • 50 days at sea
  • 2,500 nautical miles
  • 5 passages over 60 nautical miles
  • 2 overnight passages
  • 5 days acting as skipper

Half the qualifying mileage should normally be completed in tidal waters. Candidates should also hold a valid First Aid certificate and SRC/VHF licence in accordance with current RYA requirements.
