RYA Coastal Skipper – Practical Course

The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course is an advanced sailing course for experienced sailors who want to develop the confidence and judgement required to undertake longer coastal and offshore passages by day and night. Considered by many to be one of the most rewarding courses within the RYA cruising scheme, the course focuses on passage making, pilotage and practical skippering in real cruising conditions.

Designed for those already sailing to Day Skipper standard, the course places a strong emphasis on command skills, decision making and yacht management. Under the guidance of experienced BOSS instructors, students take responsibility for passage planning, crew management, navigation and the safe handling of the yacht during more demanding passages and conditions.

Training takes place in the Solent and along the South Coast, allowing students to experience tidal pilotage, night sailing, harbour approaches and longer coastal passages. Throughout the course there is continued development of yacht handling under sail and power together with emergency procedures, adverse weather considerations and offshore seamanship.

By the end of the course, successful students will be able to skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night and will be awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course completion certificate. The course also forms excellent preparation for those considering the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore examinations.
