RYA Training Course

Online – PPR Course

The RYA Professional Practices & Responsibilities (PPR) course is an online training course required for commercial endorsement of RYA Certificates of Competence including Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore. The course has been developed by the RYA to ensure professional skippers and instructors understand the legal responsibilities, safety obligations and professional standards required when working commercially in the marine industry.

Delivered entirely online, the course allows students to complete the training flexibly at their own pace from home or onboard. The syllabus covers key professional subjects including maritime legislation, health and safety responsibilities, commercial endorsement requirements, crew welfare and environmental considerations. The online format combines interactive learning modules with knowledge checks throughout the course.

The course is suitable for commercially endorsed skippers, instructors and professional crew working aboard yachts and small commercial vessels. It is also an essential requirement for candidates applying for or renewing an RYA commercial endorsement. Completion of the course demonstrates an understanding of the professional responsibilities expected of commercially operating skippers.

Once registered, students receive online access to the course materials and can progress through the modules at a pace that suits their schedule. Upon successful completion, the RYA PPR certificate is issued electronically.

There are no formal experience requirements for the PPR course itself. However, the course is intended for sailors applying for or renewing an RYA commercial endorsement and is therefore most relevant to holders of RYA Certificates of Competence such as Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore.
