RYA Training Course

Online – Short Range VHF Radio Course

The Online Short Range Certificate VHF Course from the British Offshore Sailing School – BOSS Sailing, provides the essential training required to operate marine VHF radio equipment safely and legally. The course prepares students for the RYA Short Range Certificate (SRC), which is the minimum qualification required by law to operate a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC).

Designed for sailors, motor cruisers, yacht crew and powerboat users, the course introduces the practical operation of marine VHF radios, emergency procedures, distress calling and routine radio communication using internationally recognised marine radio protocols.

Flexible online learning allows students to study from home and work through the syllabus at a pace that suits their schedule before completing the SRC assessment. Training covers both traditional voice procedures and modern DSC radio operation, helping students develop confidence using marine communications equipment in real-world situations.

Delivered by BOSS Sailing, an established RYA Recognised Training Centre based at Hamble Point Marina, the course combines professional instruction, flexible online learning and instructor support throughout the training process.

Throughout the course students will develop practical knowledge and understanding of:

Marine VHF radio operation
Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
Distress, urgency and safety procedures
Routine radio communication
Emergency radio protocols
Mayday procedures
Radio etiquette and regulations
Use of handheld and fixed VHF radios
GMDSS basics
