RYA Day Skipper Distance Learning Course

The Online RYA Day Skipper Theory Course from BOSS provides a flexible and comprehensive introduction to coastal navigation, pilotage and passage planning for sailors and motor cruisers preparing to skipper a vessel by day in familiar waters.

Designed for students wanting to study at home and progress at their own pace, the course covers all of the theoretical knowledge required before moving onto the RYA Day Skipper Practical course and qualification. Through structured online learning and instructor support, students develop a strong understanding of chartwork, tidal calculations, weather forecasting, buoyage, collision regulations and practical navigation techniques.

The course is suitable for sailors, yacht crew and motor cruisers with some practical boating experience who want to improve their confidence, decision-making and navigation ability afloat. It is also ideal for those progressing from the RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship course or preparing for independent skippering.

Delivered by BOSS Sailing, an established RYA Recognised Training Centre based at Hamble Point Marina, the course combines flexible home study with professional tuition and ongoing instructor guidance throughout the syllabus.

Postage is free of charge within the UK. There is an additional £20 courier charge for any country outside of the UK. 

The course is completed entirely online, allowing students to study flexibly from home and work through the syllabus at their own pace.

Interactive learning modules, navigation exercises and chartwork tasks guide students through the course step-by-step, helping to build confidence and understanding gradually.

No previous sailing experience is needed. The RYA Competent Crew course is designed for complete beginners, and your instructor will guide you through everything step by step. By the end of the course, you should feel confident helping to sail the yacht, handling ropes, steering and taking part in everyday life on board.
