Sailpower – Sail Trim & Performance Masterclass

The Sailpower Masterclass is a practical sailing weekend focused on improving sail trim, yacht performance and helming technique. Designed for sailors who already have some practical experience, the course develops a deeper understanding of how sails work and how correct trim, balance and steering can significantly improve the performance and handling of a cruising yacht.

Unlike a racing course, Sailpower is aimed at cruising sailors who want to sail their yachts more efficiently, comfortably and confidently. Throughout the weekend, students take part in practical exercises exploring sail shape, tell tales, twist, reefing, balance and steering techniques while learning how wind strength and sea conditions affect yacht performance.

The course includes extensive time under sail in the varied conditions of the Solent, allowing students to experiment with trim changes and immediately feel their effect on boat speed, balance and comfort. Helming technique, sail interaction and efficient teamwork onboard are also developed throughout the weekend. Depending on yacht configuration and conditions, the course may also include asymmetric or conventional spinnaker handling.

By the end of the course, participants will have a clearer understanding of how to get the best performance from a cruising yacht while sailing more smoothly and efficiently in a wide range of conditions.

This masterclass is best suited to sailors with some previous practical sailing experience, ideally at Competent Crew or Day Skipper level and above. Participants should already be comfortable taking part in sail handling and helming onboard a cruising yacht.
