International Certificate of Competence Course

The ICC – International Certificate of Competence (Sail) is the most widely recognised certificate of competence for those planning to sail or charter yachts outside of the UK. The qualification is accepted throughout much of Europe and the Mediterranean and is required by many charter companies as evidence of practical sailing ability. The ICC is issued by the RYA on behalf of the UK Government under UNECE Resolution 40.

The BOSS ICC assessment is run over a two day weekend and is designed for competent sailors who already have previous yacht skippering experience. The assessment combines practical boat handling and navigation exercises with guidance and coaching where required. During the weekend, candidates are assessed on yacht handling under sail and power, navigation, pilotage, safety procedures and general seamanship.

The course is particularly suitable for sailors planning flotilla holidays, bareboat chartering or independent cruising overseas. For those whose sailing experience is more limited, or who have not previously skippered a yacht, the RYA Day Skipper Practical course is normally the more appropriate route, as successful completion of that course allows direct application for the ICC without separate assessment.

The weekend also provides an excellent opportunity to refresh navigation and boat handling skills while preparing for sailing abroad in unfamiliar waters and tidal conditions.

Teaching ratio on board 5:1

Not included in the course fee: Although accommodation is provided onboard, the mooring fees are split between the students. Wet weather jackets & salopettes are available to hire for £7.50 per day. A selection of accompanying course books & logbooks are available to purchase.

This training and assessment course is intended for competent sailors with previous yacht skippering experience.

Candidates should already be comfortable handling a yacht under sail and power and possess practical navigation and pilotage experience appropriate to skippering a yacht in coastal waters.
