Online CEVNI Assessment

The Online CEVNI Test from BOSS provides sailors and motor cruisers with the knowledge required to obtain the CEVNI endorsement for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) when cruising on European inland waterways.

CEVNI, which stands for the European Code for Inland Waterways, sets out the navigation rules, signage and regulations used across many inland waterways throughout Europe. Sailors planning to cruise rivers, canals and inland waterways in countries such as France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands may require a CEVNI endorsement in addition to their ICC.

The online CEVNI course and test introduce students to the inland navigation signs, lights, sound signals and operational rules commonly encountered on European waterways. Flexible online learning allows students to study from home and complete the assessment at a pace that suits their schedule.

Delivered by BOSS Sailing, an established RYA Recognised Training Centre based at Hamble Point Marina, the course provides a straightforward and professional route towards obtaining the inland waterways endorsement required for European cruising holidays and extended canal or river passages.

Throughout the course students will develop practical knowledge and understanding of:

  • European inland waterways regulations
  • CEVNI signage and symbols
  • Lights and sound signals
  • Navigation rules for inland waterways
  • Passing and overtaking procedures
  • Canal and river navigation
  • Safety requirements
  • Inland waterway markings
  • Vessel conduct and responsibilities

Training focuses on helping students understand the practical rules and regulations encountered while cruising on European inland waterways.

The Online CEVNI Test is designed for sailors and motor cruisers intending to cruise on European inland waterways where the ICC inland waterways endorsement is required.

It is particularly suitable for:

  • Yacht owners cruising European canals and rivers
  • Motor cruisers travelling inland waterways
  • Holiday boat hirers
  • ICC applicants requiring the inland waterways endorsement
  • Sailors planning extended European cruising
  • Skippers preparing for French canal cruising

The course is ideal for anyone wanting to understand the inland navigation rules and signage used across Europe before travelling abroad.
