For those who want an intensive introduction to sailing without committing to a full season, the 14-day Fastrak to Day Skipper course provides a concentrated route from beginner level towards the RYA Day Skipper qualification.

The programme combines:

• A five-day RYA Competent Crew practical course
• A four-day RYA Day Skipper shorebased course
• A five-day RYA Day Skipper practical course

Intermediate Gap Year and Career-Break Sailing

Fastrak to Coastal Skipper

The programme is designed for aspiring professional sailors, ambitious cruising sailors, gap year students and people considering a career change. It combines practical sailing, navigation theory, offshore passage-making, sea-mile development and Yachtmaster preparation within one structured training programme.

Students spend substantial time afloat, developing the judgement and practical competence that cannot be gained through classroom study alone. Training takes place from BOSS at Hamble Point Marina, with access to the Solent, the English Channel and surrounding offshore waters.

Current 18-week programme intakes are planned for:

• February 2027
• May 2027

Can a Sailing Gap Year Lead to Employment?

A longer sailing programme can form part of a pathway towards professional work, but completing a training course does not by itself guarantee employment or automatically provide a commercial qualification.

Candidates seeking professional work will normally need to pass the relevant RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence examination. A Yachtmaster certificate must also be commercially endorsed for many paid roles aboard vessels operating under the applicable commercial codes.

A commercial endorsement has additional requirements, which can include professional-practice training, medical certification and sea-survival or safety training. Full details should always be checked against the latest RYA commercial endorsement guidance.

Once appropriately qualified and endorsed, opportunities may include work as yacht crew, mate or skipper, subject to the vessel, operating area, employer’s requirements and your level of experience. Younger participants may be able to combine sailing with elements of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Gold DofE Residential Sailing Course

The five-day Gold DofE Residential RYA Competent Crew course is designed for young people aged 14–17. Participants live aboard a cruising yacht, learn practical sailing skills and work with other young people in a new environment.

The programme develops teamwork, independence, communication and responsibility while working towards the RYA Competent Crew certificate.

Gold DofE Sailing Expedition

BOSS also runs an Open Gold DofE Sailing Expedition programme for participants who want to complete their expedition by yacht but do not already have a full team.

DofE activities must be approved in advance by the participant’s DofE leader or organisation. Eligibility, age requirements and the precise way an activity contributes to the Award should always be confirmed before booking.

What Is Included in a Gap Year Sailing Programme?

Exact inclusions depend on the length and structure of the course. During liveaboard practical sailing modules, participants will normally stay aboard the training yacht and take part in everyday life on board.
