STCW - Basic Sea Safety Course
Course components
Our five day entry level STCW Basic Safety training programme meets the requirements of the international ‘Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping’, commonly known as STCW 95/2010. These standards, established by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), provide a baseline for the STCW Basic Safety training and education of seafarers around the world.
They were introduced to counter a growing number of accidents at sea caused by ‘human error’, several of which involved vessels we now know as 'superyachts'.
Please note that these courses are non residential and the price does not include accommodation.
With safety high on the yacht owner’s agenda, it is now commonplace to request an STCW 95/2010 Basic Safety training certificate from even the most junior crew members.
The 5 day STCW Basic Safety Training course is made up of four elements which meet the minimum STCW 2010 training requirements :
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
This element of the course includes the precautions for; minimising the risk of fire, the causes of fires and how to extinguish them. Practical training using fire fighting equipment and breathing apparatus to extinguish various types and sizes of fires is also carried out.
Personal Survival Techniques
Teaches the actions to be taken by individuals to protect themselves in emergency situations and includes practical training using life jackets and inflatable life rafts.
Elementary First Aid
A combination of theory and practical training for basic first aid and life-saving skills.
Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
This part if the course safety procedures and accident prevention, it also familiarises novices with the employment conditions and working environment on board.
Proficiency in Security Awareness
This module, although not a requirement, is included at no additional cost. It Provides knowledge, understanding and proficiency to personnel intending to work on ships who will not have any designated security duties.
The STCW 95 Basic Safety training modules can be attended over five days or individual elements can be attended one at a time, as required. This course is run by an associate training provider from their base in Hythe, Southampton.
